Banding in Covid

With Covid-19 in the community we want to stay as safe as we can, while playing music together. In general the NZCBA recommends being vaccinated as a precaution against catching and spreading Covid-19, particularly in the Red alert level. Please note this page does not constitute legal advice; this is a list of recommendations based on Ministry of Health guidelines as of April 2022.

In Red

Rehearsals can go ahead in Red, but if your region is being hit particularly hard by Covid we recommend holding off on rehearsals until local case numbers decrease. The threshold at which you may decide to call off rehearsals is entirely up to your band’s committee or governing body, taking into account any venue regulations.

  • Stay home if you feel unwell!
  • Wear masks at all times, except while playing your instrument.
  • Conductor should wear a mask.
  • Spacing of 1.5 to 2 metres is encouraged.
  • No shared refreshments in the break.
  • Keep rehearsals to no longer than 2 hours.
  • Ensure all rehearsal spaces are ventilated.
  • Scan in where practicable.

In Orange

Rehearsals can go ahead in Orange, and have fewer restrictions than in Red, particularly as mask wearing is no longer mandatory. Your rehearsal venue may have some additional regulations, in addition to those listed below.

  • Stay home if you feel unwell.
  • We encourage wearing masks when you aren’t playing your instrument. Conductor doesn’t need to wear a mask, although they may if it makes them feel more comfortable.
  • We encourage wearing masks around members of the public, especially if you rehearse in a school.
  • Spacing of 1 to 1.5 metres is encouraged.
  • No shared refreshments in the break.
  • Ensure all rehearsal spaces are well ventilated where practicable.

In Green

Rehearsals can go ahead with the fewest restrictions. Once New Zealand looks likely to head into the Green alert level we will post some guidelines. However, we expect them to look like the following:

  • Stay home if you feel unwell.
  • We encourage wearing masks around members of the public, especially if you rehearse in a school.
  • Ensure all rehearsal spaces are well ventilated where practicable.
