2017 Festival – Whangarei

Hosted by the fabulous Whangarei Youth Music at Forum North, Festival 2017 featured a range of new workshops. A significant number of the bands were attending for the first time. The band performances were livestreamed around the world by Brassbanned. The band adjudicators were David Bremner (Principal Trombone of NZSO) and John Snowling (NZCBA Life Member), and the solo/ensemble adjudicators were Clare Penny (woodwind) and Jillian Christoff (brass).

A significant change for 2017 was the introduction of soloist categories (School, Tertiary, and Open). The Spirit of the Festival award was awarded for the first time, to James Cook High School Concert Band. The competitive category had five entrants in 2017.

An absolute highlight of the weekend was the prizegiving premiere of an Anthony Young piece, Sacred Breath – Turbulent Ocean, presented by a combined band including NZYSW, Whangarei Youth Music Concert Band, and WYM “Sistema kids”.

Festival Bands 2017

2016 Festival – Gisborne

The 2016 Festival in Gisborne was memorable for a region-wide power cut. The organisers and attendees coped admirably with some hurried re-arrangements. The NZYSW performed their lunchtime concert in the foyer of the Gisborne War Memorial Theatre! Adjudication was primarily provided by members of the RNZAF Band, and their concert was a highlight of the weekend. Especially popular was Buzz Newton’s euphonium solo performance of “Fnugg”, a multiphonic beatboxing piece by Øystein Baadsvik.

The Competitive Category was introduced for the first time, along with the The Royal New Zealand Navy Band Award: For 1st place in the Competitive Category.

The RNZAF Band also contributed a new award, The Royal New Zealand Air Force Band Award: For an outstanding performance by an ensemble.

The Festival was livestreamed around the world by BrassBanned.

The Faces of Festival 2016

2015 Festival – Rotorua

The Rotorua Symphonic Band hosted the 2015 Festival, and we were lucky to have the Sir Howard Morrison Performing Arts Centre as our venue. Twenty-five bands came away with either a gold, silver or bronze award, having been adjudicated by Debbie Rawson and Owen Clarke. Solos and ensembles were adjudicated by Hayden Sinclair and Mike Ashton.  The Royal NZ Navy Band not only provided most of our adjudicators; they also provided a fantastic concert featuring some rousing classics, as well a great variety of ensembles and soloists.

Kathleen Mulligan and Maxine Treweek were awarded NZCBA life memberships. Musicians could attend masterclasses with saxophonist Michael Jamieson or clarinettist Marcel Luxen.

2015 was the first year the Festival was livestreamed around the world by BrassBanned.
