Information and Application Form
NZYSW, in its seventh year, is the national youth concert band for musicians aged under 25. It is an initiative of the New Zealand Concert Bands Association. Our Musical Director is Dr Kevin Cameron. He will hold this position through to 2022.
Musicians who play woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments are invited to audition. Age must be 16 to 24 as of January 1, 2020. Musicians under 16 may be accepted depending on their playing level and experience. It is expected that an approximate level of Grade 7 Trinity or equivalent is the minimum playing standard.
Closing Date for Auditions:
Sunday October 13, 2019 but preferably before to avoid clashes with examination preparation.
Dates (Subject to change):
Summer Event in Auckland: Tuesday 21 January 11am to Saturday 25 January 2pm (Four nights)
Winter Event in Wellington: Thursday 2 July 11am to Sunday 5 July 2pm (Three nights)
NZCBA is committed to ensuring the cost of NZYSW is as low as possible. In 2020, the full membership fee will be $500 or $300 for one event. This will include accommodation, most food, costs associated with engaging a professional Musical Director/chaperones/managers, venue hire, concerts, percussion hire, buses, music, etc. Musicians are responsible for travel to and from their home and the rehearsal venue.
Scholarships will be available. Upon a successful audition, musicians will be asked if they would like to be considered for one of the scholarships (all donations appreciated).
A deposit of $200 is required upon acceptance of a position. Final payment is due early January 2020.
Reimbursements will not be made for musicians who find themselves unable to attend for any reason other than bereavement or medical emergencies.
NZYSW gratefully acknowledges Pub Charity Limited and Southern Trust Ltd for past sponsorship.
Each musician is required to submit a film/video of themselves. The video must not be edited. Don’t worry about your hair either….we just want to hear your music! But take care not to obscure your face and hands.
On your video:
State your name clearly, first and last.
Play all excerpts first. Two or three PDF file(s) for each instrument are contained in the following Google Drive folder. Please note: some of the excerpts that have been set test extreme ranges of the instrument… they are designed to do so! Please give these your best attempt. Auxiliary instruments (eg Eb/bass clarinet and piccolo) need only play the prescribed excerpt on the instrument – no solo piece is required from these instruments – however players must also complete the full audition requirements on their standard instrument equivalents (eg clarinet and flute, respectively). Percussion should attempt as many of the excerpts as they can. Showing a range of skills will be considered favourably in the audition process.
Perform two other contrasting pieces, or extracts of pieces, of your choice; please make these no longer than two minutes each. The first should be a work demonstrating your technical skill, the second should be a lyrical work.
We are looking/listening for tone, technical skill, musical shaping, tuning, sense of style. Please choose your work(s) to show these aspects of music making.
Upload your performance onto your Online drive (google, drop box etc) and paste the url in the application form. Please ensure permissions are granted so we can open it
