Manukau Concert Band is a community band with a membership of 40 to 45 musicians. The members come from all over Auckland, from West Auckland to Waiuku. The band’s philosophy is to provide an organisation whereby musicians can come together with a common goal of making and enjoying music at a high level, and providing music for the community. Concerts may include visiting groups, other community ensembles and special guests. The repertoire of Manukau Concert Band ranges from popular marches and show tunes to light classical pieces and music composed for concert bands. MCB regularly presents New Zealand premieres of exciting and challenging new compositions for wind band.
In February 2005, a group of musicians and conductors came together to discuss the possibility of the formation of an independent wind band in Hawke’s Bay, and as a result Bay Cities’ Symphonic Band was born. The task of conducting the Band has been shared in the main by John Snowling, former Director of Music at Lindisfarne College Hastings, and Brian Kennedy, an experienced bandsman and past Bandmaster of the Napier Salvation Army.
In addition to presenting concerts around the district, the Band encourages school bands to become more involved, by holding joint concerts whenever possible. Each year the Band attends a number of events such as The Hawke’s Bay Festival of Bands, The Feilding Band Festival, The National Concert Bands Festival and visits to other towns outside of the district. The Band has been very successful and had attained several Gold and Silver Awards.
We are a community organisation with members ranging in age from high school music students to senior citizens. We encourage young players in the Band and offer a sense of belonging whilst they learn about commitment and respect, and improve their musical skills. We share a passion for promoting quality wind band music throughout Hawke’s Bay. We strive for musical excellence whilst encouraging friendship and camaraderie.
