Waikato Youth Symphonic Band was formed in 1988 by Stewart Stanbridge who is completing his 30th year as conductor. The band aims to provide opportunities for keen young musicians to develop their skills in a setting where the quest for constant improvement is important. Players are unauditioned. They mainly come from high schools in the Hamilton and wider Waikato areas. A few are involved in tertiary education and one or two are new members of the workforce. There is an emphasis on enjoyment – especially through meeting the challenges brought by repertoire that makes demands and ultimately extends playing skills.
