Established in 1976, West City Concert Band is one of Auckland’s premier wind ensembles, and has maintained a strong presence in the West Auckland community. The band provides an environment for local musicians to join together and experience learning opportunities with friendly people, giving a sense of high achievement both on and off the stage. West City Concert Band has over 50 musicians from a diverse range of backgrounds, experience and skill levels who wish to keep up with their music.
In February 2005, a group of musicians and conductors came together to discuss the possibility of the formation of an independent wind band in Hawke’s Bay, and as a result Bay Cities’ Symphonic Band was born. The task of conducting the Band has been shared in the main by John Snowling, former Director of Music at Lindisfarne College Hastings, and Brian Kennedy, an experienced bandsman and past Bandmaster of the Napier Salvation Army.
In addition to presenting concerts around the district, the Band encourages school bands to become more involved, by holding joint concerts whenever possible. Each year the Band attends a number of events such as The Hawke’s Bay Festival of Bands, The Feilding Band Festival, The National Concert Bands Festival and visits to other towns outside of the district. The Band has been very successful and had attained several Gold and Silver Awards.
We are a community organisation with members ranging in age from high school music students to senior citizens. We encourage young players in the Band and offer a sense of belonging whilst they learn about commitment and respect, and improve their musical skills. We share a passion for promoting quality wind band music throughout Hawke’s Bay. We strive for musical excellence whilst encouraging friendship and camaraderie.
