New Zealand Youth Symphonic Winds 2018 Information
NZYSW, in its fifth year, is the leading concert band for musicians aged under 25. It is an initiative of New Zealand Concert Bands Association.
The Musical Director for 2018 is Simon Brew, a highly accomplished, energetic and enthusiastic conductor. He is an exceptional musician, teacher and director, and is very excited about his role with NZYSW for the second year.
Musicians of wind, brass, and percussion instruments are invited to audition. Age must be 24 or under as of January 1, 2018. It is expected that an approximate level of Grade 7 Trinity or equivalent is the minimum playing standard.
NZYSW 2018 repertoire will include works which feature soloist e.g. concertos, mini concerto-type works. If you are interested in being one of our soloists, please select that on the form. We will ask you for which work you might like to play, whether you have access to the parts for it, or may be able to suggest a work for you if you are successful. You will be asked to supply an extended audition of the work you’d like to play or of a similarly technical work if you do not have access to the work.
Sunday, November 12, 2018.
Note that as this is near the start of NCEA Examinations, high school aged applicants are strongly encouraged to submit their audition earlier rather than later.
Summer Event: January 23 to 26 in Auckland (venue to be confirmed) Arrive for a 10am rehearsal. Depart after 5pm on 26th.
Winter Event: July 17 to 21 arrive in Wellington for a 10am rehearsal. Touring up the island ending in Palmerston North for a departure on July 21.
Musicians are expected to participate in both Summer and Winter Events. Exceptions to this will be considered based on available instrumentation, reason for absence, past commitment to NZYSW. Cost will be $300 for anyone accepted to one event only.
NZCBA is committed to ensuring the cost of NZYSW is as low as possible. In 2018, the membership fee will be $500. This will include accommodation, most food, costs associated with Musical Director/chaperones/managers, venue hire, concerts, percussion hire, buses, music, etc. Should substantial sponsorship be gained, this price will drop.
Full payment is required by mid January 2018. Reimbursements will not b e made for musicians who find themselves unable to attend for any reason other than bereavement or medical emergencies.
Each musician is required to film/video themselves. The video must not be edited. Don’t worry about your hair either….we just want to hear your music! But take care not to obscure your face and hands.
On your video:
- State your name clearly, first and last.
- Play excerpts first. Dropbox has files for each instrument here.
- Perform one other piece of your choice: please, no longer than three minutes. You may stop before the end if the work is longer than three minutes
Load your performance onto your drive (google, drop box etc) and paste the url in the application form.
